May 14 - July 12, 2009
Opening Reception: Thursday, May 28th at 7pm

Bazgasht in Urdu and Hindi means echo or likeness of something that repeats or resonates leading to a revival. Bazgasht: Traditional Methods and Modern Practices presents works by internationally acclaimed artists leading the modern-day revival of miniature painting traditions from South Asia. These artists portray bold and fresh perspectives, on both local and global levels as they take a new look at this art form by questioning, adopting and
re-inventing traditional practices.
The contemporary miniature art movement has reached new heights in post-modern art. It has a serious following and enjoys the patronage and support of curators and collectors alike.
Perfection and attention to detail are the hallmarks of the miniature style of painting. Miniature painting is steeped in centuries old tradition. Students learn by example as teachers demonstrate the detailed processes of creating a miniature painting including making the paint brush, preparing the wasli (paper), grinding minerals for the opaque pigments and tracing the primary image onto the wasli.
The modern day practioners of contemporary miniature art featured in this exhibition include Waseem Ahmed (Pakistan), Sylvat Aziz (Canada), Ambreen Butt (USA), Ayesha Durrani (Pakistan), Nandini Gandhi (India), Aisha Khalid (Pakistan), Nathu Lal (India), Hasnat Mahmood (Pakistan), Tazeen Qayyum (Canada), Noreen Qamar (Pakistan), Imran Qureshi (Pakistan), Nusra Latif Qureshi (Australia), Talha Rathore (USA), Reeta Saeed (Canada), Amrit and Rabindra Kaur Singh (UK), Cole Swanson (Canada), Saira Wasim (USA), Sumaira
Tazeen (Pakistan), Sabeen Raja (Pakistan), Sehr Jalal (USA), Mohammad Zeeshan (Pakistan).
These outstanding young artists address vital social and geo-political issues and explore their artistic expression as revivalists. This ancient painting technique is increasingly gaining recognition in the modern realm of contemporary art.
Two very rare paintings in miniature style by the world renowned Indian Master Francis Newton Souza from 1965 will also be exhibited along with selected samples of traditional miniature paintings from the Mughal, Deccan, Rajasthan, Pahari and Punjab schools.
